July 22 - July 26, 2019
In this one week workshop we will explore letterpress printing and a variety of experimental inking techniques that will help you create stunning, one-of-a-kind prints with depth and dimension. Working with both traditional and contemporary approaches to creating relief prints, participants will use a variety of materials such as wood, metal, and plastic type, along with linoleum blocks to create unique work that tells a story. You will learn how to work with brayer offset inking methods, painting on the type, ghost prints, ink wiping techniques and more. Demonstrations will include pressure printing, monoprinting, typesetting, and registering multiple layers and colors. Participants will have the opportunity to produce a variety of printed pieces as either small editions or monoprints. All experience levels are welcome.

Kinship is the web of social relationships that we form in our lives. There are many ways that we build community and this network can include both family and social connections. This act of tying yourself to others creates a sense of belonging and fellowship. There are many ways to look at these connections and through that exploration patterns and kin groups arise. In her work Stephanie Carpenter examines the way we create our own unique communities. This exhibit features prints and an installation that were created using vintage wood and hand-carved blocks at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum.
